Seventh ranked Creighton must move on without star point guard Maurice Watson and that begins Saturday afternoon when the Bluejays host Marquette in BIG EAST action. Watson suffered a season ending knee injury in the first half of Monday’s win at Xavier and coach Greg McDermott admits there is no way to replace the nation’s leader in assists.
“He is responsible for 35 points a game between his assists and scoring and that is only part of his value”, said McDermott. “There is maybe not one player as important to his team as Maurice was to us but that does not mean we still can’t win games.”
McDermott does not expect a complete overhaul in terms of style but says Watson’s absence will force them to make adjustments.
“We are going to experiment with a lot of things here the next few days and I think we can throw some different looks out there”, added McDermott. “To see what we are going to do you have to show up.”
Creighton is 5-1 in the league race and 18-1 overall for the first time in program history. Marquette is 3-3 in the BIG EAST and 12-6 overall.
