Kansas City Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura was killed in a trafic accident in his native Dominican Republic Sunday morning. The 25-year-old Ventura was known for his 100-mph fastball and a fiery demeanor and burst onto the scene in 2014 when he finished 14-10 with a 3.20 ERA.
Ventura spent part of the 2013 season with the Omaha Storm Chasers. In 15 appearances with the Chasers, he was 5-4 with a 3.74 ERA while striking out 81 in 77 innings. He made a brief return to Omaha in 2015 and made two starts.
Former major league Andy Marte was killed in a seperate accident in the Dominican Republic. Marte, a 33-year-old infielder, played in the major leagues from 2005-2010 with Atlanta and Cleveland and returned in 2014 with Arizona.
