Creighton coach Greg McDermott does not call it “starting over” but the Bluejays are going through a major adjustment without their star point guard. After opening the season 18-1 and rising to number seven in the national polls the Jays have dropped two straight games after losing Maurice Watson to a season ending knee injury.
They hope to stop the skid at home on Saturday afternoon against DePaul.
“I don’t think you can take down and start over but we certainly have to tweak”, said McDermott. “We have lost a big part of our offense but he is also a big part of our defense. We have got to have guys step up and play better.”
That won’t be easy in the middle of a difficult conference race. Creighton is coming off a 71-51 loss at Georgetown. The 51 points was a season low.
“Some guys are being asked to play a role they have not had to play at any point in their career”, added McDermott. “That is difficult to do in late January but it is going to have to happen.”
The 16th ranked Jays are 5-3 in the BIG EAST. DePaul is 1-6 in conference play after a 70-69 overtime loss to 11th rated Butler.
