Two Beatrice residents are charged in a child abuse case after a three-year-old girl was hospitalized with severe injuries last month.
Beatrice police arrested 34-year-old Jason Sanchez and his 33-year-old girlfriend, Laura Blakely. Police Lieutenant Mike Oliver says the two were taken into custody on Monday.
“We had a report of a child who had bruises pretty much all over her body, the three-year-old,” Oliver says. “We did some follow-up investigation and they were the only two people who had access to that particular child.”
Police say Blakely is the girl’s mother and she also has a boy in third grade. Oliver says the girl was hospitalized in intensive care for a few days in late December and has since recovered from her injuries, which included a broken clavicle.
“She also had a brain bleed and a fractured pelvis,” he says. Both children are now in foster care.
Sanchez and Blakely face charges for intentional child abuse as well as drug possession, while more charges are filed against Sanchez.
“He resisted arrest,” Oliver says. “He broke a window of a cruiser, back window of a cruiser.” Oliver says Sanchez was injured by the broken glass after he shattered the window.
Police Chief Bruce Lang says more charges are possible in the investigation. Tests of the children’s hair follicles were positive for methamphetamine and THC.
