Vacant house fires are becoming a big problem in Omaha. It seems several times a week the Omaha Fire Department is called to one of these unoccupied homes to battle a blaze.
Omaha Battalion Chief Robert Gottsch says even though the homes are vacant they still work hard to determine a cause.
Chief Gottsch says, “You have juvenile fire play out there. You have homeless people. You have people who see it as an eyesore and want to get rid of it. There is just a multitude of possible motives for why these occur. That is why we try to get information from people who may have seen something prior to our arrival.”
On Thursday firefighters rushed to a vacant house in the midtown area. The house was unoccupied but the fire started in a bedroom. Investigators believe squatters were using the home for shelter. There were no utilities hooked up to the home.
