A one-vehicle crash in central Nebraska took the life of two young Nebraskans this weekend.
The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office reports a heavy-duty pick-up traveling north on Daykin Road went off the roadway, ran into a ditch, and rolled sometime late Friday night or very early Saturday morning.
Two passengers in the pick-up, 21-year-old Amber Frerichs of Bassett and 29-year-old Neal Maloley of Kearney died in the crash.
The driver, 23-year-old Kalen Pfeiffer of rural Amherst, and three other passengers were taken by ambulance of the CHI Good Samaritan Hospital.
Frerichs was a junior at the University of Nebraska-Kearney, majoring in Exercise Science.
UNK issued a written statement this morning:
“Amber Frerichs was an active participant in student life and activities at UNK, particularly in Campus Recreation and our Wellness Center. Many knew her and will miss her. We’re offering counseling resources for our campus community. It’s devastating for us, but more so for her family and friends, who our hearts go out to. “
