Convicted murderer Anthony Garcia sat silent during a hearing today and refused to answer questions from the judge or members of his legal teams. Garcia was then ordered to the Lincoln Regional Center for evaluation to determine if he is competent to take part in the sentencing phase of his trial process.
Garcia refused to attend a hearing last week in Douglas County. His legal team stated that Garcia’s actions today are similar to what they had experienced when asking him questions. Garcia is scheduled to be sentenced at the end of the month but that may change pending the outcome of the mental evaluation.
Garcia is accused of the 2008 murders of 11 year old Thomas Hunter and family housekeeper 54 year old Shirlee Sherman and the 2013 murders of Dr. Roger Brumback and his wife, Mary. All the victims had ties to Creighton University’s Pathology Department. Prosecutors say Garcia committed the murders for revenge after being fired from the department back in 2001.
