Fraternity accused of harassment during Women’s March at UNL suspended

A fraternity on the campus of the University of Nebraska – Lincoln has been suspended until May of 2020.

UNL Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Juan Franco, announced the suspension of Phi Gama Delta which came after a university investigation uncovered a pattern of behavior and a series of instances within the fraternity that violated the Student Code of Conduct. Behavior cited by the university included reckless alcohol use, hazing, and inappropriate sexually-based behavior, including a pattern of sexually harassing conduct.

The conduct occurred over a span of time and came to a head earlier this year.

UNL reports that while it wasn’t the focal point of the suspension, comments shouted by Fiji members January 21st at those participating in the Women’s March on the Lincoln campus were found to be consistent with a pattern of sexual harassment by the fraternity.

“We have completed a thorough investigation and review, and we have found a clear pattern of conduct that is inconsistent with expectations for a student organization at our university,” Franco said in a written statement released by UNL. “We have taken appropriate action to address the chapter’s culture and ensure the safety of our students.”

The University of Nebraska – Lincoln no longer recognizes Phi Gamma Delta, known as Fiji, as a Greek organization. Phi Gamma Delta’s affiliation has been revoked. Freshmen pledges will not be permitted to live in its chapter house at 1425 R Street.

The fraternity can petition for reinstatement in two years, contingent upon the fraternity taking steps toward lasting reform. If reinstated, Phi Gamma Delta would have to serve two years of probation.

“The members of the chapter have expressed their commitment to the changes and progress necessary to regain recognition from the university,” said Bill Martin, executive director of Phi Gamma Delta International Fraternity, said in a written statement also released by UNL. “We all appreciate the opportunity to cooperate with the university to fashion a meaningful rehabilitation plan to accomplish this.”

Phil Gamma Delta was placed on interim suspension February 7th.
