A 62-year-old Maxwell man will serve 20 to 60 years in prison for killing his wife, a death he first tried to pawn off as an accident in an effort to collect on a life insurance policy.
The Nebraska Attorney General’s office reports Emerson Craig was convicted earlier of 2nd Degree Murder in the death of his wife, Heidi Craig.
Craig made an emergency call on April 26th of 2014, claiming he had found his wife in a Quonset hut, dead after a hay bale had fallen on her. Craig stated he had used his truck in an attempt to pull the hay bale off his wife.
After law enforcement officers arrived at the farm, their investigation determined the scene had been staged. An autopsy determined that Heidi Craig had been strangled to death. A forensic engineer who reviewed the investigation concluded the accident could not have occurred as reported.
Craig had taken out a life insurance policy that would have paid double if his wife died an accidental death.
