The owner of Weatherguard Inc. in Omaha is still dealing with the threats made after Kentucky lost to North Carolina in final four contest. John Higgins is a referee and angry Kentucky fans from a call he made during the game. Higgins says he received 15,000 to 20,000 angry phone calls, emails and messages left on social media from those disgruntled fans. Higgins says a majority of those were from angry fans just venting but a few went beyond that.
Higgins says, “There is at least five they have found so far that are credible threats. When it got to the concern of the safety of myself, my family, my business, my employees – when we were threatened that to me was unacceptable.” That is when law enforcement was called and Omaha police provided extra security when some of those threats included death.
Higgins also has to work to clear the name of his business. Many of those messages were left on Facebook, Yelp and the BBB giving Weatherguard Inc. a bad rating. He says they went from a 4.8 rating down to a 1.2. He is working with online outlets to have that bad information scrubbed so his business can return to normal as well. That will take some time.
Higgins has been an NCAA referee for 28 years and says he will continue to officiate.
