There was another incident within the Nebraska Department of Corrections on Friday where inmates at the Diagnostic Evaluation Center in Lincoln that involved a fire in a housing unit. In this incident three staff members were attacked and injured. This is one of several in recent months where guards were attacked by inmates at state correctional facilities.
Governor Pete Ricketts is not happy that a legislative committee working on the next two year budget cut the additional corrections officers he requested in half.
Governor Ricketts says, “For months and months the Legislature said we needed to reform corrections. Tell us what you need to do that. We gave them a list of things we need and now they are cutting it.”
Governor Ricketts goes on to say that we felt it was important to fully fund their budget request to be able to continue to protect the public’s safety. He says, “I’m very disappointed the Legislature really decided to reverse course.”
The Appropriations Committee decided not to fund all 48 new positions, a nearly $11-million cost over two years. The state is facing a projected $288-million revenue shortfall.
