Even if rain is in the forecast for some areas of Nebraska, hundreds of turkey hunters are expected to take to the great outdoors this weekend. Greg Wagner with Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says this is the opening weekend of the spring shotgun wild turkey season. He says, “Governor Ricketts proclaimed us as the premier state to hunt turkeys.” Wagner says there are turkeys in all of Nebraska’s 93 counties and hunters should have good luck this weekend.
Other hunters will be out this weekend as well but they won’t be looking for turkey. Wagner says morel mushrooms are just starting to pop up. He says, “These are the early grays. These are the three to four inch morels along the river bottom woods and along the dead and decaying cottonwood trees. They are just starting to come up.”
Wagner says the weather plays a huge role in morels and it looks like it will be a good season. He says rain, warm days and higher humidity are ideal growing conditions for this springtime treat. They should start popping up in the hills in within the next two weeks.
