Make it 10 straight wins for the Creighton baseball team. Pinch-runner Nicholas Ortega scampered home on an infield error in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Bluejays bear Villanova 2-1. Creighton improves to 8-1 in the BIG EAST and 18-16 overall.
“I think it is our 15th one run game already and we are playing better in these kinds of situations”, said Creighton coach Ed Servais. “I don’t think it will be our last one and we are going to play in a lot more of these before it is all said and done.”
After opening the season 1-11 the Bluejays now own the nation’s longest active win streak.
“That is really hard to do”, added Servais. “To win 10 in a row with young players says a lot about these guys.”
Creighton earned the victory with an unearned run in the ninth inning, as Clark Brinkman’s grounder to shortstop was misplayed, allowing pinch-runner Nicholas Ortega to score from third without a throw. Ortega was on the bases in place of Riley Landuyt , who doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning, then moved to third base on a Bryce Only sacrifice bunt.
Creighton remains at home and will host Wichita State on Tuesday night at 6:30 pm.
