Omaha firefighters battled cold temperatures and strong wind in fighting a blaze at a popular restaurant in the historic Florence area in the northeast part of the city. Fire Battalion Chief Dan Olson says they could see flames and smoke coming from the Mouth of the South at 30th and Willit around 7 this morning.
Olson says, “We are dealing with what appears to be multiple additions in terms of the ceiling so we have multi-layered ceilings so it is difficult to reach the fire. We also have what we believe a multi-layered roof. As you know this is an older building so that isn’t uncommon in our city.” He says the strong wind and colder conditions made it more difficult to fight this fire.
Jim McClurkin operates a nearby barber shop and says, “It is really devastating for this little area here. He has really had an excellent business. It has really taken off. It has brought people into Florence and at lunchtime I have a hard time for my people to find a place to park because of everybody who wants to come there.”
The cause of the fire is not known and no one was hurt. Damage to the building is described as heavy.
