It is a good day to stay indoors in Nebraska. Snow is falling in Scottsbluff, Alliance, Chadron, Kimball, Sidney and a wintery mix is reported in North Platte, Ogallala, Broken Bow, Ord, Albion, Wayne and Norfolk. The rest of the state is getting a good soaking rain. Cathy Zapotocny is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Omaha and says travelers can expect wet roads in the eastern and central part of the state but extra care will be needed for those heading west and north.
Temperatures will remain in the 40’s on Saturday and in the 30’s and 40’s on Sunday. Zapotocny says, “We are looking at what kind of snow possibility we do have because we do have some cold air on the back side of the system. It looks like that will arrive Sunday night so I would say stay tuned as far as the rain – snow potential as we get into the latter part of the weekend and even into Monday morning.”
Snowfall is possible then in parts of the state depending on where that cold pocket of air lands. Eastern Nebraska may be spared but areas west and north could have snow on May Day.
Snow in April and May is unusual but Zapotocny says it does happen. A foot of snow has been reported in Nebraska in April and several inches have been reported in May in recent years.
