The family of one of the inmates killed in the 2015 Mother’s Day riot in the Tecumseh state prison has filed a lawsuit against the state.
The mother of Shon Collins filed suit in Lancaster County District Court. The lawsuit accuses the state of Nebraska of failing to protect Collins. It further states the Tecumseh prison was nor properly staffed on May 10th of 2015 when the riot broke out.
Collins had been under protective custody after being injured by fellow inmates previously. The lawsuit states protective custody inmates should have been kept apart from the general population. It claims prison staff failed to gain control of the prison, leaving inmates such as Collins to fend for themselves.
The lawsuit does not set a specific amount sought in compensation.
Collins and inmate Donald Peacock died in the riot.
