An Omaha woman is charged with child neglect for leaving a three year old locked in a van alone late Monday morning. Another woman walking her dogs around 11:30 heard a sound she thought was a cat. She soon realized it was a child crying and followed the sound back to a locked van. That is when she called the police to a home near 19th and Binney Street where officers knocked on the door but there was no answer.
Omaha firefighters were called and they broke out a window to rescue 3 year old Demyiah Hayes who was taken to a hospital for observation. Medics estimate the temperature inside the van was 115-degrees. Hayes continues to recover.
Police were located the owner of the Van, 56 year old Gladys Vinson who owns a daycare in Bellevue. She told police that her sister, 53 year old Tina Youngblood drove the van Monday to pick up and drop off kids at the daycare. Youngblood told police she started picking up children at 7:50 a.m. and dropped them off at shortly after 10:00.
Youngblood told police she returned home at 10:36 and parked the van at her home. She said she looked in the rearview mirror and did not see any children in the back of the van. That is when she was cited for child abuse by neglect.
