Those traveling to and from Eppley Airfield in Omaha can expect to see orange construction barrels for the next two years. Omaha Airport Authority Chief of Police Tim Conahan says construction is officially underway today on their new $89-million, 3,000 stall parking garage. This will impact those needing to rent or return vehicles.
The car rental facility was moved to the Canopy Lot south of the Terminal. Customers will use the rental car counters inside the airport for transactions and then a free shuttle will take them to the lot where they will pick up their vehicle. Those returning vehicles will drop them off in the temporary lot and catch the shuttle to the Terminal. All shuttle pick-ups and drop-offs will take place outside door 5 and there is a monitor inside that provides the bus locations for customers. Once the new garage is built the rental car service will be located in the new facility.
Conahan says the new garage is being built on the parking lot north of the current garage. He says there has been some concern that there will be limited parking at Eppley. Conahan says, “We do have over 7,000 parking stalls available for our patrons out here so we don’t anticipate there will be any problems. The current garage is open. We have our south long-term parking and our north long-term parking so we’ve got plenty of parking spaces for the public should they need to use them.”
The construction will impact traffic around Eppley. Northbound Abbot Drive will be down to one lane west of the airport during the construction phase.
