The V-A Omaha National Cemetery is getting ready for their first Memorial Day ceremony to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in military service. Director Cindy Van Bibber says the cemetery located at 142nd and Schram Road in Sarpy County opened last year and they are hoping their first Memorial Day is very special.
Van Bibber says, “Our program on Memorial Day is our traditional Memorial Day program. We will have guest speakers, the raising of the flag, presentations and our rifle salute.”
Van Bibber says they are very fortunate to have a support committee at the Omaha National Cemetery and they have been busy spearheading this event. Many volunteers have been involved with parking, arranging the speakers to making programs.
The cemetery is still under construction so there is a very small parking lot. Van Bibber says they have spill-over parking available at the Millard Hall on 144th Street. Shuttles will pick up and drop people off at the cemetery. She asks that the parking at the cemetery be reserved for those needing handicapped parking.
The Memorial Day program starts at 11:15 a.m. Those wanting to help place flags should be at the cemetery at 10 a.m. this Saturday morning. They also need help removing the flags on Tuesday starting at 9 a.m.
