Update: Due to weather conditions the water search has been suspended today. It will resume on Tuesday, weather permitting.
The recovery effort resumed this morning for a man missing on Cunningham Lake just north of Omaha. Family members confirmed that 42 year old Benjamin Pike was fishing with his 8 year old son, Colin Sunday afternoon when he decided to jump into the water to cool off. A spokesperson for the family says Pike told his son he would keep a hand on the boat so his son wouldn’t get scared. That is when a big wave came through and his hand disappeared.
A family member said the 8 year old threw the anchor into the water and started waving his hands for help. She says someone in a pontoon boat stopped by, picked him up and took him safely to shore. The search then started for Pike.
The spokesperson said, “They had search and rescue with boats, 4-wheelers, jet skis and they never found them. Right before dark they said this was no longer a rescue.”
Rescue crews now plan to dredge the lake at some point today.
