It is estimated that one in 25 individuals suffer from some form of mental illness such as depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. That was the case with Zachary Bearheels who suffered from mental illness and died during a confrontation with Omaha police last week.
Dr. Howard Liu is a psychiatrist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and while he has no knowledge of Bearheels medical history he can speak about disorders in general. First, Dr. Liu says symptoms can be managed but not cured similar to managing diabetes or blood pressure.
Next is living a good lifestyle. Dr. Liu says, “We really try to do as much as possible in terms of a good lifestyle. Things that control some of your activity – especially getting enough sleep, rest and exercise. The medications can be very important though for folks to maintain a constant state of mood that isn’t in depression or sometimes what we call a mania which can cycle for people with bipolar disorders.” He says it is also very important that patients work with their physicians to closely determine which medications work the best for the patient without difficulty tolerating it, weight gain or other side effects.
Dr. Liu says although it is a bit more rare people can suffer from multiple types of disorders at the same time.
