Jared Poche’ tossed eight solid innings to become LSU’s all-time leader in wins as the Tigers beat Florida State 7-4 at the College World Series. Freshman Jake Slaughter had a three run homer as the Tigers took control by scoring five runs in the second inning.
“Jared was the key to the game”, said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “Florida State leads the country in bases on balls and Jared walked only two in eight innings. Coming out right away and showing great command I thought set the tone for the game.”
The Tigers advance to play top ranked Oregon State and will need to beat the Beavers twice to advance to the championship series.
The loss ended Florida State’s season with a record of 46-23. It was the 16th World Series appearance for the Seminoles under coach Mike Martin.
“I don’t know when I have ever been prouder of a baseball team”, said Martin. “Guys wanted the top of the mountain but there is only one team that is going to leave here happy.”
Action resumes tonight at TD Ameritrade Park as Louisville takes on TCU.
