A neighbor just levelled harsh criticism of Sen. Ben Sasse.
Prior to an appearance of President Donald Trump in Cedar Rapids, the chairman of the Iowa Republican Party lashed into opponents of the president.
“If you are Republican in this state, we stand with our president, period,” Iowa Republican Party chairman Jeff Kaufmann told an enthusiastic crowd awaiting the president’s arrival.
Kaufmann criticized Democrats, then turned his wrath on Republicans who have opposed Trump.
Kaufmann said he’s tired of the “Never Trumpers” in the GOP, taking direct aim at Sen. Sasse.
“We had Sen. Ben Sasse from Nebraska,” Kaufmann told the crowd. “He crosses the Missouri River and in that sanctimonious tone talks about what he doesn’t like about Donald Trump. You know what, Senator Sasse? I really don’t care what you think. We love Donald Trump!”
Kaufmann served as the warm-up speaker Wednesday night at a campaign-style rally for the president in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Kaufmann blasted the media for failing to “stand with Donald J. Trump” and Sasse got the same treatment.
“And if you don’t love him, I’d suggest you stay on your side of the Missouri River,” Kaufmann said.
Sasse is scheduled to speak in central Iowa next month. He’s the keynote speaker at a fundraiser for Story County Republicans.
Nebraska Radio Network requested a response from Sen. Sasse’s office. In an email, Taylor Silva, Nebraska Press Assistant for Sasse, stated, “We will politely decline to comment.”
O. Kay Henderson of Radio Iowa covered President Trump’s appearance in Iowa and provided the material for this story.
