Cleanup continues after the June 16 storms and tornadoes that hit eastern Nebraska. Offutt Air Force Base near Bellevue was in the path of that storm and 55th Wing spokesperson Drew Nystrom says the damage runs in the millions of dollars.
Nystrom says, “Regarding our facilities and our infrastructure, a very preliminary total estimated cost for repairs is expected to be $7 to $10 million which will include numerous roof repairs, tree removal, HVAC repairs, fencing replacement and the associated manpower costs.” The base has more than 350 damaged trees, not counting those at the base lake or Willow Lakes Golf Course. Those will have to be removed.
Nystrom says a total of eight aircraft were damaged. Six planes were repaired and already back in service and the two others will rejoin the fleet soon.
Nystrom says, “Combat capability was not affected by the storm and we have and will continue to meet any and all higher headquarters requirements.” He says they are also proud and relieved that no team members were injured by the storm.
