Florida struck first in the championship round of the College World Series. Brady Singer fanned a championship record 12 batters over seven innings of work as the Gators held off LSU 4-3. Singer says the key was throwing his slider for strikes.
“I felt like I was landing it a lot more for strikes than I usually do”, said Singer. “The slider did feel go and I was throwing the fastball to both sides of the plate.”
The Gators can clinch their first national championship with a victory in game two this evening.
“Obviously there is a long way to go in this thing”, said Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan. “This is a long way from being over and we are going to have to play better.”
LSU needs a win to force a winner take all third game.
“Our kids left it out there on the field and played their hearts out”, said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “We just came up a little bit short but we don’t thing this series is over by a long stretch.”
