State officials have issued a health alert for Rockford Lake in southeastern Nebraska’s Gage County and have continued one for Pawnee Lake in Lancaster County, near Lincoln for toxic blue-green algae, also known as algal blooms.
The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality has detected elevated toxin levels produced by blue-green algal blooms in Rockford Lake.
State officials advise the public to avoid jumping into the lakes during the alert; no swimming, wading, skiing, or jet skiing. Keep pets out of the water. Don’t let them drink the water. Swimming beaches have been closed. Boating, fishing, and camping are allowed.
Health alerts will not be lifted unless clean samples are taken from the lakes for two consecutive weeks.
A park permit is required of each vehicle entering Rockford or Pawnee state recreation areas.
