A 32-year-old Omaha man has been arrested after being released from the hospital, charged with motor vehicle homicide and driving drunk, causing a fatal wreck last week.
Omaha police reports Nemias Garcia-Velasco is also accused of reckless driving and operating without a driver’s license.
The accident report released by the Omaha Police Department states a work van was traveling at excessive speeds on the on-ramp to northbound I-680 from I-80 westbound when it left the roadway, struck and then vaulted over a metal guardrail. The van struck a concrete bridge support and rolled over. It caught fire.
58-year-old Silvano Torres of Omaha died at the scene.
Police say Torres was riding unrestrained in the rear cargo area of the van.
A front-seat passenger, 16-year-old Jesus Gonzalez, was treated and released from a local hospital.
The investigation in the fiery fatal crash continues. Police say Garcia-Velasco suffered severe burns to his legs. It is believed he was ejected from the van.
