Scam artists based in Florida are posing as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska. Chief Security Officer Kerry Kremke says they were using Blue Cross’ logo and web address to make the offer look legitimate.
Kremke says, “Our threat intelligence function at Blue Cross Blue Shield recently discovered there were entities that were utilizing our brand and our name with the purpose of marketing insurance and selling insurance. The investigation led back to a company in Florida. The follow up information was based on public information that was available on the internet and other sources that we researched.”
The Nebraska Attorney General’s office says the scammers were using a fake physical address in Omaha and believe it was affiliated with an entity called Simple Health based in Hollywood, Florida. The scam artists would call Nebraskans to collect personal information and offer insurance plans well below market value.
The victims reported online that the company charged their credit card monthly but never provided insurance cards or proof of coverage .
