This is the deal of the year for those needing to get rid of old tires. The Papio Missouri River NRD, Nebraska Loess Hills RC&D Council and the Lower Elkhorn NRD will have a free scrap tire collection this Friday. Terry Schumacher with the Papio Missouri River NRD says this will take place at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Arlington.
Schumacher says, “I think it is a heck of a deal. It is eliminated the potential soil, water and air pollution caused by the burning. A lot of these tires unfortunately if people don’t have a place for them they may end up in a road ditch or something like that.”
Tires can be brought in from ten counties that include Burt, Colfax, Cuming, Dakota, Dodge, Douglas, Sarpy, Stanton, Thurston and Washington. Residents and businesses that do not charge tire disposal fees can drop off tires at no cost from 8 a.m. until noon. Champlin Tire Recycling will process the tires and repair those that are salvageable and the others will be repurposed into park benches, picnic tables and feed bunks.
There are a few rules. There is a 100 tire limit and rims must be removed or the tire will be refused.
This event is funded through a grant from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality.
