A motorcyclist wearing what police called a “novelty helmet” has been struck and killed by a car after he ran a red light in Grand Island.
Grand Island police report James O’Brien of Loup City was riding south on Highway 281 Thursday night when he sped up to beat a traffic light at the intersection with State Street. Police say he ran the red light and a car heading north on Highway 281 ran into his motorcycle.
Emergency crews rushed O’Brien to a hospital where he later died of his injuries.
Police suggest the fatality could have been avoided. O’Brien was wearing a novelty helmet and police say an approved Department of Transportation motorcycle helmet might have prevented the head injuries he suffered from becoming fatal.
