Starting September 4th, Nebraska Medicine in Omaha is closing their inpatient burn unit and all patients needing that type of care will be treated at CHI Health St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln. Dr. David Voight is the Burn Co-Medical Director at St. Elizabeth’s and explains why the collaboration.
Dr. Voight says, “The American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons has standards for burn centers to be a verified burn center. One of those standards is the number of patients. Frankly, our area just does not have enough population to support two well, verified burn centers.
Burn patients will continue to receive burn trauma care at Nebraska Medicine and they will be transferred to St. Elizabeth’s if needed. If burn unit care isn’t needed those patients will continue to receive care in Omaha as well as follow-ups after their release.
St. Elizabeth’s is a regional burn center for a six state area and sees about 500 patients a year compared to about 100 in Omaha. Officials at Nebraska Medicine they will work closely with the staff at St. Elizabeth’s to make sure that burn patents receive the best care at right facility.
