It was a Denver police officer who drowned in Lake McConaughy in western Nebraska Sunday.
The Denver Police Department identified the drowning victim as Officer Joseph Teeter of Littleton, Colorado, an 11-year veteran of the Denver police force.
The department says Teeter was boating on Lake McConaughy with his longtime girlfriend on Sunday.
In a Facebook post, the department stated, “He was a great man, friend and officer,” who will be “sorely missed.”
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reports conservation officers and the Lake McConaughy Dive Rescue team members responded to an emergency call late Sunday morning.
Two anglers had secured the body about two miles west of Van’s Lakeview. Divers recovered the body.
The preliminary investigation determined Teeter jumped from a boat for a swim. He was not able to swim back to the boat. Neither alcohol nor foul play is suspected, according to Game and Parks. Teeter was not wearing a life jacket.
The investigation into the drowning continues.
