Water is back on in Seward after large water main break

August 23, 2017 By Karla James

There is good news for the residents of Seward but the problems are far from over after a huge water main break on Sunday.   City Administrator Greg Butcher says everyone in the community now has water service.

Butcher says, “Everybody has water now but we are still under a ‘do not consume’ restriction. That includes not boiling the water in any way and consuming it until further notice.”

Butcher says water samples were sent to the Health Department for testing on Monday and Tuesday and they are still waiting to hear the results. The all clear could be given later today.

Butcher says a 14 inch water main broke under the floodwaters of the Big Blue River. Workers had to cap and valve each side of the break.  He says those repairs were made Monday night.  Tuesday night there were a number of businesses and residents on South 6th Street who were still without water.  Crews had to dig down into a 15 foot trench to cut the water main and put a new valve and turn the water back on.  That was complete around 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Butcher says further evaluation will be done to determine if further repairs are needed.
