The Nebraska National Guard deployed 23 soldiers to Texas to assist in the ongoing Hurricane Harvey relief operations. State Public Affairs Officer Lt. Col. Kevin Hynes says they received a request from Texas for additional aviation resources and responded to that call.
Along with the soldiers Nebraska sent two UH-0 Blackhawk helicopters and two CH-47 Chinook helicopters to that region. Lt. Col. Hynes says, “These helicopters are equipped to do air medical evacuation missions. They are also equipped with hoists so they can do hoist rescue operations. They are also useful in just moving cargo and supplies to areas where it is needed.” On Monday the helicopters and guard members were used to move cargo around the Houston area.
Additional Nebraska Army National Guard helicopters and crews are ready to support the mission if requested. Lt. Col. Hynes says they are receiving a lot of information from Texas and planning in the event that the missions grow. He says they are looking at how to provide those addition resources if asked.
