A truck driver has been charged with misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide in connection with the fatal accident in which a Creighton University student died last month.
Omaha police report that after consultation with the Douglas County Attorney’s Office, 69-year-old Robert Richmond of Omaha has been charged in the accident which involved a number of vehicles and injured several. 19-year-old Joan Ocampo-Yambing of Rosemont, Minnesota, a sophomore at Creighton, died in the accident August 21st.
Ocampo-Yambing was riding with five other students on their way to Lincoln to view the solar eclipse.
According to the accident report, Richmond was driving a semi-tractor west on I-80 near the 84th Street overpass when he failed to notice that traffic had slowed considerably. Richmond rear-ended a passenger car. The truck bounced off that car and rear-ended another car, coming to rest on its top. The force of the crash sent the second car into the rear-end of a “roll off” trailer being pulled by another semi-tractor.
Five people were injured in the wreck, a 76-year-old woman, a 54-year-old woman, and two 19-year-old women.
