While the debate on alcohol sales in Whiteclay continues in the Nebraska Supreme Court, there is another problem in Sheridan County. There have been three recent fatal alcohol related accidents in that area since the stores closed.
Sheridan County Attorney Jamian Simmons says, “We’ve heard from a lot of residents that live along various county roads, particularly in the northern side of the county that have expressed a lot of concerns in the increased traffic on those county roads that wasn’t there before. According to them it is most out-of-state traffic and that is possibly related to traveling for alcohol.”
However, Simmons says the types of crimes they see vary from season to season and accidents can happen randomly. She says, “I just don’t think there has been enough time for me to be comfortable saying any changes we have seen are specifically related to Whiteclay. I don’t know if I’m comfortable saying that.”
Simmons has been with the Sheridan County Attorney’s office since 2006 and cannot remember any other time period when they experienced this many serious alcohol related accidents in the same general area.
