There was a shake-up in Husker Nation on Thursday with the firing of Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst.
The Huskers are 1-2 after an embarrassing loss to last Saturday to Northern Illinois.
Rob Zatechka played for the Huskers in the glory days of the 1990’s and then for the New York Giants. He wasn’t surprised with the decision to let Eichorst go for obvious reasons.
Zatechka says, “You haven’t seen the success on the football field that I think was expected when they brought Riley to town, essentially after a one man coaching search. It all kind of started pointing back to the way that Eichorst did things and the disagreement the rest of the administration had in the way he did things that really started to upset people.”
Zatechka says he didn’t expect that Eichorst would be fired three games into the season, but after the loss to Northern Illinois last Saturday was part of trend seen over the past few years. When Eichorst came to Lincoln five years ago he stated he was going to be the man behind the scenes. Zatechka says the athletic director is basically the gatekeeper for the media and boosters to talk to the coach and players and not having that is upsetting.
Zatechka says it is always a step backwards when you make changes to administration or coaching staff but that is done so the team can work hard and take two steps forward. A national search is underway for a new University of Nebraska athletic director.
