Nebraska football coach Mike Riley says he was shocked when informed about the firing of athletic director Shawn Eichorst. Riley reacted to the firing after Thursday’s practice. Eichorst had been the AD since October of 2012 and his dismissal came less than a week after the Huskers lost a home game to Northern Illinois to fall to 1-2.
“I was taken back, surprised and probably flat out saddened by the whole deal”, said Riley. “I really enjoyed working with Shawn. Besides being a good man I think he had everybody’s best interest at heart.”
Riley says he was informed personally by University chancellor Ronnie Green and president Hank Bounds about Eichorst’s firing and his priority now is to get the Huskers ready for Saturday’s Big Ten opener against Rutgers.
“I am just thankful he brought me here.”
