A Lincoln man is facing charges of drunk driving and fatally injuring a bicyclist.
Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office reports 66 year old Zygmunt Spicha was driving under the influence on West Sprague Road, southwest of Lincoln, on Saturday afternoon.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Todd Duncan says Spicha’s Jeep Cherokee hit 52 year old Randall Gibson of Lincoln as both were traveling eastbound.
Duncan says his office and law enforcement throughout the state are clear in stating that no one should drink and drive.
“It’s 2017 and there are just too many paid transportation services out there for this kind of thing to continue to happen in our county and our community. Whether it’s calling a taxi, calling a friend, calling an Uber, calling a Lyft,” Duncan told reporters at the daily media briefing. “Don’t drink and drive. This is totally preventable.”
Duncan says Spicha was arrested for misdemeanor driving under the influence and motor vehicle homicide, which is a felony.
“The Sheriff’s Office takes DUI enforcement very seriously and we enforce DUI violations aggressively 24/7, 365 days a year,” Duncan says.
Spicha was wearing a seatbelt and uninjured.
Investigators say Gibson was wearing a bicycle helmet and riding within the legal distance of the white line.
Just east of the SW 58th Street intersection, Spicha struck Gibson with the front of his vehicle.
West Sprague Road is a two lane, asphalt road with no paved shoulders.
