The Nebraska State Treasurer’s online auction of safe deposit box contents brought in $78,716.
The items in the safe deposit boxes were classified as abandoned, so the Treasurer’s Office put them on eBay.
The amount raised was five times what the last auction resulted in during 2012.
Treasurer Don Stenberg says the results exceeded his expectations.
“About five days in, we already had bids totaling over $56,000 for all of the property that we had,” he tells Nebraska Radio Network. “That was about the appraised value of the entire collection.”
The highest single bid was $3,350 for nearly four dozen silver dollars and other coins.
The most popular item was a set of baseball cards featuring Roger Maris, Roberto Clemente, and Sandy Koufax.
Stenberg says the money from the auction will be held by the Treasurer’s Office, in case the rightful owners or their descendants come forward to claim it.
The items were turned over by banks between 2006 and 2011.
