Thousands of people walked through the gates of Junkstock last weekend outside of Waterloo but there was a very special guess there Friday morning, country music legend Willie Nelson.
Public Relations Director Danelle Schlegelmilch says, “Friday morning he came in in the rain and the girl taking money and stamped hands said, ‘look, there is Willie’. No one thought to tell the Junkstock staff. He just wandered around in the morning. He told vendors he was happy he had time and he had wanted to come because it was on his bucket list.”
Schlegelmilch says one of the vendors recognized Nelson as they had met before. She talked with Nelson for a while and he said he had a musical family and was from out of town. Several other vendors and visitors also reported seeing Nelson but they didn’t cause a scene. They left him alone to shop and enjoy the festival. Nelson ended up purchasing a few items before taking off.
Schlegelmilch says Junkstock invited Nelson to attend a few years ago when he had a concert in Neligh with Neil Young. It was a standing invitation and apparently Nelson took them up on it after wrapping up a concert in Kansas.
