According to Captain Landon Grothe, firefighters from Norfolk, Battle Creek and Hadar used two ariel trucks to control the fire at 815 West Benjamin Avenue – near the southwest corner of Benjamin Avenue and Riverside Boulevard.
Firefighters were dispatched at 3:30 PM and first-arriving crews encountered heavy smoke and flames.
Grothe says it took 50 firefighters about 45 minutes to have the fire under control, which was made more difficult due to gusty winds and the building’s location.
There was heavy fire and smoke damage to the structure. The American Red Cross and Salvation Army assisted displaced occupants.
There were no injuries. The fire’s cause is being investigated.
