Nebraska Public Power District is responding to an incident at the Cooper Nuclear Station. Officials declared a “Notification of Unusual Event” or NOUE today at 11:18. A maintenance crew was working on the non-nuclear system and discovered a hydrogen leak into the main plant area.
Officials say the plant is stable and continues to operate. There is no threat to the public.
Mark Becker is NPPD’s Corporate Media and Media Services Supervisor and says, “It is a low end of what we call the reporting system of 1 to 4. it is not serious but something that has to be repaired and taken care of. It is our duty to make sure people are aware that we have these kinds of issues.”
A NOUE is a level one emergency, minor in nature.
The Cooper Nuclear station is located southeast of Brownville.
