Nebraska Medicine in Omaha is now a nationally recognized Level 1 trauma center. Previously they were a state designated Comprehensive Trauma Center but they recently met the standards of the American College of Surgeons to achieve national status. This is the most difficult of the accreditations to get and it is a national benchmark.
Trauma Medical Director Dr. P.J. Schenarts says Nebraska Medicine set the goal to expand its trauma services three years ago and it was a very comprehensive process. He says, “They gave us a two day review looking at all our policies, outcomes, procedures, outreach, research, education and we were fortunate not to have one single citation and very thrilled to be verified.”
Dr. Schenarts says this was done with all the citizens of Nebraska in mind. He says the achievement means they have the capacity and capability to treat any patient’s injury any time of the day or night.
Nebraska Medicine employs more than 50 subspecialty physicians who are experts in trauma, reconstructive, vascular and orthopedic surgery, urology, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and much more.
Nebraska Medicine is the only ACS verified Level 1 trauma center in Nebraska with the nearest others being in Des Moines, Kansas City and Denver.
