Today is National Package Protection Day, a time to raise awareness on the importance of protecting what is delivered to your home, especially during the holiday season. Fed Ex and UPS trucks are making the rounds and they are being followed by “porch pirates” who swipe those delivered packages.
SEI Security Solutions Vice President Jason Cloudt in Omaha says more people are taking precautions by setting up home video security cameras. There are many different types available but the most popular is the video doorbell.
Cloudt says, “Some of the less expensive options may not be tied to your smart device but the most common devices have the ability for you to launch an app on your phone and watch live or get an alert when there is live video. When somebody is pushing the button or someone who is within view of that camera on your front door.”
The cameras range in price from under $100 for do-it-yourself models to $350 professionally installed. Omaha police say the video is helpful in tracking down the thieves but if you don’t want the added cost this time of year they suggest getting all packages delivered to your workplace.
