A 25-year-old Lincoln man died after being run over by a train near Waverly, despite repeated warnings by the train crew.
The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the victim: Jeremy Sanchez.
The sheriff’s office reports it and Waverly Fire & Rescue responded to an emergency call at 1:38 Thursday afternoon. A man had been hit by a train near the intersection of Amberly Road and Highway 6, near the Waverly High School.
Emergency responders found Sanchez dead between the railroad tracks and Highway 6.
Sanchez had been walking eastbound on or near the railroad tracks when struck from behind by a BNSF freight train. Witnesses report the BNSF crew sounded the train horn several times and hit the emergency brakes, but Sanchez didn’t move away from the tracks.
The investigation into the fatality continues.
