The University of Nebraska system has hired a former state senator to fill an administrative role.
Heath Mello will serve as the associate vice president of university affairs and director of state relations.
He served two terms in the Unicameral and ran unsuccessfully for Omaha mayor earlier this year.
During his time as senator, Mello chaired the Appropriations Committee and served on the Nebraska Retirement Systems Committee, the Legislature’s Planning Committee, Building Maintenance Committee, Legislative Performance Audit Committee, Rules Committee, the Legislature’s Executive Board and a number of select committees and task forces.
Mello earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
He will be paid a salary of $165,000 per year.
