Clashes are now taking place in Jerusalem’s Old City after the announcement by President Trump that the U.S. will recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and will move the embassy there from Tel Aviv. Congressman Don Bacon agrees with Trump’s decision saying it is a decision long overdue.
Congressman Bacon says, “There have been a lot of threats of violence with this with our moving our embassy to Jerusalem. It has gone on for years. We’ve promised to move our embassy there for over a decade and we’ve not because of all these threats of violence. I frankly think that is blackmail. We shouldn’t be blackmailed by violence to do the right thing.”
Bacon says there has been a “warming” between Israel, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. He says this may create a temporary chill but it is time to get the process moving.
Meanwhile, protests have erupted along the West Bank today. Several countries are demanding an emergency meeting of the United Nations fearing the decision could derail peace efforts. The U.N. Security Council could meet on the issue as soon as Friday.
