A special ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 16th at the Omaha National Cemetery to place wreathes on gravesites of veterans and their family members.
The ceremony coincides with 1,100 other cemeteries across the country. This is part of the 12th annual Wreaths Across America program.
“These wreath laying ceremonies help us continue the mission of maintaining national cemeteries as national shrines, sacred to the honor and memory of those interred or memorialized here, ” said cemetery director Cindy Van Bibber. “it is a wonderful way for the community to come together and pay our respects during the holiday season.”
Van Bibber says following the ceremony, family members will first be allowed to place wreaths on the graves of loved ones. Volunteers will then place wreaths on graves of soldiers where family members are not present. More than 800 wreaths will be placed on Saturday and Van Bibber says volunteers are welcome to participate.
The Omaha National Cemetery is located a 14250 Schram Road. Parking on site is limited to those with handicapped placards. Others are asked to park at nearby Werner Park and take shuttle transports to and from the cemetery.
