The federal government faces a shutdown unless Congress comes up with a funding plan by Friday night. Republican Congressman Don Bacon says right now both sides of the aisle agree that more money needs to be spent on defense. However they disagree on domestic spending.
Congressman Bacon says, “Folks on the other side of the aisle say Don, we’ll put another dollar in defense if you put another dollar in Head Start. I think that is a terrible way to run our national security when we have nuclear North Korea with 60 nuclear weapons ruffling. We have what is going on in Europe. We have to fund our military to the strategy that we want. Both the Democrats and Republicans agree that we should do that but it is being held hostage because the Republicans don’t want to spend as much as the Democrats do on domestic spending.”
Congressman Bacon says the right thing to do is to treat both of those issues separately.
He says, “We agree on defense. Let’s move forward and get our national security right. Next debate our domestic policies and compromise but don’t hold our defense hostage in the meantime.” He adds this will end with a showdown.
